Hi Uplevelers,
This week’s newsletter is styled differently. This is an actual workshop that we did for a company called Relatient, an innovative product company in the U.S. healthcare space, with an engineering team in Pune, India. They were hosting a tech offsite “Innovation at Dash Bash ‘24”, and they wanted us to speak about the changing nature of innovation using ML / AI.
What made them reach out to us was that they weren’t looking for a generic AI innovation talk and they also wanted to encourage participants to get inspired about keeping up trends and contributing to innovation. So we crafted an agenda that blended theoretical frameworks with practical applications, using real-world examples (like Grammarly's ML innovations) to inspire our own journey toward becoming better innovators!
Opening with AI Innovation
The session kicked off with an engaging 5-minute lightning round of questions about AI and innovation. This interactive opener served as more than just an icebreaker – it helped gauge the room's understanding of AI's transformative potential and set the stage for deeper discussions about innovation in practice.
Grammarly: A Case Study in ML Innovation
One of the highlight segments focused on how Grammarly revolutionized its platform by integrating machine learning capabilities. This 10-minute deep dive illustrated how even established companies can embrace technological advancement to enhance their core offerings. The story emphasized that innovation isn't just about breakthrough moments – it's about maintaining a mindset of continuous improvement and adaptation.
The key takeaway from this segment was how Grammarly's success came not just from the technical implementation of ML features, but from fostering a culture that encourages continuous innovation. This resonated strongly with the team, as they too strive to build a similar mindset within their organization.
Defining Innovation
The workshop then took a step back to explore a fundamental question: What exactly is innovation?
This 5-minute segment proved crucial in establishing a shared understanding. Innovation was defined not just as breakthrough inventions, but as the systematic process of turning ideas into value-creating solutions. This definition set the foundation for the rest of the session.
The Innovator's DNA: A Deep Dive
The cornerstone of the workshop was a comprehensive 25-minute exploration of the Innovator's DNA. This framework outlined five essential areas that characterize successful innovators:
Associating: The ability to connect seemingly unrelated questions, problems, or ideas from different fields. Participants learned how cross-pollination of ideas often leads to breakthrough innovations, particularly in the AI/ML space where interdisciplinary thinking is crucial.
Questioning: The importance of challenging current assumptions and asking "what if," "why," and "why not" questions. We explored how questioning status quo processes can lead to identifying opportunities for AI implementation.
Observing: Developing keen observation skills to detect small behavioral details that suggest new ways of doing things. This skill is particularly relevant when identifying processes that could benefit from automation or ML enhancement.
Networking: The value of building and maintaining a diverse network to gain different perspectives. We discussed how networking within and outside the AI community can spark new ideas and collaborations.
Experimenting: The willingness to try new experiences and pilot new ideas. The session emphasized how controlled experimentation, especially in AI projects, can lead to significant breakthroughs while managing risks.
Making Time for Innovation
A practical 10-minute segment addressed one of the biggest challenges professionals face: finding time for innovation amid daily responsibilities. The discussion provided actionable strategies for carving out innovation time:
Scheduling dedicated "innovation blocks" in your calendar
Creating cross-functional innovation teams
Implementing a "20% time" policy for exploring new ideas
Setting up regular innovation reviews and checkpoints
Using AI tools to automate routine tasks, freeing up time for creative work
Interactive Innovation Exercise
The workshop concluded with an engaging 15-minute exercise that put the learned concepts into practice. Participants worked in small groups to identify potential AI/ML applications within their departments, using the Innovator's DNA framework to approach the challenge systematically.
The final 10 minutes were wisely allocated as buffer time, allowing for organic discussions and networking among participants. This unstructured time proved valuable as teams began forming spontaneous collaborations around the ideas generated during the workshop.
Key Takeaways
Innovation is a skill that can be systematically developed and practiced
AI and ML provide unprecedented opportunities for innovation across all business functions
Success requires both technical knowledge and an innovation mindset
Making time for innovation is crucial and requires intentional planning
Cross-functional collaboration often leads to the most impactful innovations
The workshop has set a strong foundation for their innovation journey. The combination of theoretical frameworks, practical examples, and interactive exercises has equipped their teams with the tools they need to drive innovation in the AI era. As we continue to build on this momentum, we're excited to see how our collective innovation capabilities will shape the organization's future.
This workshop wasn't just an event – it was the beginning of a systematic approach to fostering innovation across the organization. By combining the Innovator's DNA framework with practical AI/ML applications, we've created a roadmap for continuous innovation that will serve Relatient well in the years ahead.
